Frequently asked questions
What data does Compare Investments use?
Daily adjusted closing prices from the same market data source that powers the rest of ROI Grid, updated daily. Adjusted prices include dividends and splits, so results are total returns — what you would actually have earned with dividends reinvested.
Which assets can I compare?
Any US-listed stock, ETF, or mutual fund plus major cryptocurrencies — search by ticker or name. Each asset is available from its first trading day; if you pick a start date before an asset existed, the tool tells you and starts the comparison the day its data begins.
Can I compare a whole portfolio instead of a single asset?
Yes. Add several assets and set their weights (or split them equally with one click), choose a rebalancing schedule, and the tool compares the whole portfolio against your benchmark.
How are monthly contributions handled?
Contributions are invested on the first trading day of each month and split across your assets by their target weights (like a real recurring buy). Performance statistics such as CAGR, volatility, and drawdown are computed on a time-weighted basis, so adding contributions never artificially inflates the return numbers.
Why do my results differ from other comparison tools?
Small differences are normal: tools differ in data granularity, how they time contributions and rebalancing, and whether they use total-return or price-only data. Large differences usually mean the other tool is ignoring dividends — this one never does.
