XRP, the token associated with Ripple, was worth only fractions of a penny in its earliest days (2013–2014). If you had invested $1,000 back then (when XRP was say $0.005), you'd have 200,000 XRP. At XRP's peak price in the late 2017 crypto boom (around $3.30 per coin), those 200k XRP would have been worth roughly $660,000 – an incredible return on $1,000. However, XRP did not sustain those highs.

Ripple (the company) has been embroiled in a legal case with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) since late 2020, which claimed that XRP was sold as an unregistered security. This lawsuit created significant uncertainty around XRP. In the immediate aftermath, many exchanges delisted or paused XRP trading, and the price dropped sharply. Throughout 2021 and 2022, XRP's performance lagged behind some other major cryptos, partly due to this cloud hanging over it. However, whenever there were positive developments or hopeful news about the case, XRP's price saw spikes (for example, in mid-2023 when Ripple had some favorable court rulings, XRP's price jumped). Overall, the SEC case tempered investor enthusiasm and likely kept XRP's price lower than it might have been, affecting ROI during that period. Once legal clarity improved, it helped XRP recover some lost ground.

XRP had an explosive rise during the 2017 crypto rally, at one point becoming the third-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. In percentage gains, that 2017 spike was larger than what Bitcoin did that year, for instance. However, since then XRP's performance has been more muted. Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, which went on to reach new all-time highs in 2020–2021, XRP has not reclaimed its 2017 high as of 2025. In the same timeframe, Bitcoin and Ethereum grew to multiples of their 2017 prices. This means that while XRP provided incredible returns if bought very early, its growth has stagnated relative to the likes of BTC and ETH in recent years. Some other altcoins also outperformed XRP in the 2020–2021 cycle. So historically, XRP's ROI has been high for early investors, but it hasn't kept pace with the best-performing cryptos after its initial spike.

Ripple's vision for XRP is to serve as a bridge currency for fast, low-cost international payments. In theory, if banks and financial institutions widely adopted Ripple's technology and XRP for transfers, demand for XRP could increase and support its price. There have been partnerships and tests with various payment providers over the years, which sometimes boosted investor optimism. However, in practice, XRP's price has often been driven more by general crypto market trends and speculation than by real-world usage. While the useful use-case gives XRP a unique story (unlike many coins, it's aimed at solving a specific problem in finance), its ROI for investors has so far been influenced largely by crypto market cycles and sentiment. In short, the cross-border payment narrative is a positive fundamental aspect, but it hasn't yet translated into a steadily rising price – that would likely require significant real adoption which is still in progress.

XRP's past performance shows mixed results. Early on, it delivered one of the most impressive short-term booms (especially in 2017, when its value multiplied many times over). However, after that boom, XRP also had prolonged periods of underperformance and high volatility. Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, XRP has not hit new record highs in the most recent cycles, meaning someone who bought at the peak in 2017 would still be waiting to break even. That said, someone who invested in XRP before 2017 and held on would still be up by a large margin today. Whether it's a good investment looking forward is hard to say – it depends on future adoption and clarity (for example, the outcome of legal issues and use by banks). Historically, XRP proved it can generate huge returns, but it also demonstrated that it can lag for years. As always, any investment in cryptocurrency should be made with caution and a long-term perspective if you believe in the project.
